Crafts for Tots

CRAFTS FOR TOTS

PAINTS

8 tbsp. powdered paint

1 tsp. white glue

2 tbsp. liquid starch

3 drops oil of cloves (obtainable from any drug store)

INSTANT PAINTS

RECIPE 1

Mix a few drops of food coloring to a small amount of liquid

starch.

RECIPE 2

Mix egg yolk, dry detergent and food coloring.

May be used on glass, foil or shiny paper.

FINGERPAINTS

RECIPE 1

Mix 1 1/2 cups starch with enough cold water to make a paste.

Slowly add 4 cups of boiling water, stirring constantly. Cook

until clear, avoiding too hot a fire. While still warm, stir in

1 1/2 cups soap flakes. Add 2 tablespoons glycerine. Add food

coloring to portion which will be used immediately and store the

remainder in the refrigerator in a covered jar.

These paints work best on glazed paper such as shelf paper.

RECIPE 2

In a double boiler, mix 1 cup cornstarch (or laundry starch)

with enough cold water to form a smooth, thin paste. Add 1 cup

flaked soap chips and 1/2 cup salt (which acts like

preservative). Add 1 quart water and cook until thick (increase

amount of water if necessary). Beat with an egg beater, and

place mixture in empty baby food jars, adding food coloring to

each jar.

One teaspoon glycerine makes mixture more pliable and easier on

the hands. Vanilla or oil of cloves can be added to mixture to

create a nice smell.

RECIPE 3 ( no cook)

Mix 6 tablespoons dry laundry starch with just enough cold

water to make mixture liquid and smooth. Pour this mixture

slowly into 1 quart boiling water, stirring well until thick.

Add a drop of oil of cloves and mix again. Divide into portions

(a muffin pan is a good holder) and add food coloring.

SOAP-BUBBLE-BLOWING LIQUID

Mix together gently:

4 cups water

12 teaspoons glycerine

8 teaspoons liquid tincture of green soap (available from

drugstore but as a substitute, grate or grind very pure toilet

soap and use 8 teaspoons of the resulting powder)

Let liquid stand for 24 hours before using.

SILLY PUTTY

2 parts Elmers' Glue-All

1 part liquid starch

Gradually pour starch into glue and mix. If mixture is sticky,

add more starch. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Note: This silly putty can be cut with scissors or be pulled or

twisted.

MODELING CLAY

RECIPE 1

Mix together:

2 1/2 cups flour 1 cup salt

1 cup water Food coloring, optional

Store in refrigerator.

RECIPE 2

Mix and cook over low heat until mixture thickens:

1 cup salt 1 cup flour

1 cup water Food coloring, optional

Cool before using

RECIPE 3

Combine over low heat, stirring constantly until mixture becomes

stiff and comes away from sides of pot:

1 cup salt 4 tablespoons oil

2 cups flour 4 tablespoons cream of tartar

2 cups water Food coloring

Store in a closed container or plastic bag.

RECIPE 4

Mix:

1 cup cornstarch 2 cups bicarbonate of soda

1 1/2 cups cold water Food coloring

Heat over medium fire, stirring constantly until mixture is

doughlike. Cool, covered with a damp cloth. Coat finished

products with a shellac to seal and preserve.

RECIPE 5 - VICTORIAN SALT CLAY

(can be used to make beads for necklaces)

Mix 2 cups salt and 2/3 cup water in a pan. Stirring

constantly, heat over a low flame for about 4 minutes (Do not

boil). Remove from heat. Quickly mix 1 cup cornstarch and 1/2

cup cold water together and add this combination in one go to

heated mixture. Stir and mix quickly. If resulting mixture is

not a thick paste, place back on low heat and stir for about a

minute until mixture is doughlike.

Treat like bread dough - knead on flat surface until dough is a

smooth and pliable mass. Can be stored in plastic or foil and

kept in an airtight container.

Color can be added when dough is being cooked or when being

kneaded, or modeled objects can be painted when dry.

It takes 2 days for a modeled object to dry at room

temperature. For quicker results, preheat oven to 350 degrees

F, and then turn the oven off. Place the model in the oven,

preferably on a wire rack, and leave inside until the oven has

cooled off.

For a finishing touch, smooth dry models by rubbing gently with

sandpaper or an emery board.

To make beads for a necklace, punch holes with a toothpick while

the clay is still pliable. You can also string the beads

through a thin wire, letting them dry on the wire itself.

Clay can also be rolled out like cookie dough and cut with a

cookie cutter.

MONSTER MAKE-UP

1 tsp. fuller's earth (available from drugstore)

1 tsp. plain yogurt

1 tsp. water

A few drops of food coloring

Lightly apply to face, avoiding areas around mouth and eyes.

(Use lipstick and/or eyeshadow for these areas).

Make-up will wash off with water.

Mountain Morning Homeschool: Quilt Book Giveaway

Mountain Morning Homeschool: Quilt Book Giveaway

The quilt I made my now 17 year old daughter before she was born.

The quilt made by my great grandma. I want to fix the middle. It has some holes I would like to use my children's clothing fabric to fix. Any ideas on an easy way to fix the holes?

Brandi has the most awesome giveaways! I even went out and bought The Apron Books just because she inspired me with her giveaway. What a wonderful book.
I have a favorite quilt that I want to revamp. It was made by my great grandmother. It was my grammy's favorite (made by her mother in law) It's been loved so much it has a few holes and I want to add squares from my children's clothing. To make it a true heirloom.

Spinning Tips

Spinning Tips

1. Attaching the leader

For a leader, you can use string or a 12" length of yarn (commercial or handspun).
I use a piece of old handspun, as it was semi felted.

Over lap a 2"-3" section of pre-drafted wool over the leader

Turn the wheel to start the twist. Holding at a 45 degree angle from the needle.

To wind on, stop the wheel and hold yarn at a 90 degree angle
and turn the wheel to wind yarn onto needle.

Move hand and wool back to a 45 degree angle and turn wheel to make more yarn.

I wind on in 2" sections and build up from there. Moving towards the tip,
as I spin a section at a time. If you try to fill the needle from
right to left, back and forth, your yarn will eventually
slid off the tip as you spin. (ask me how I know…lol).

Learn How to Have a Portrait Party:

ARTICLE
_________
Create a Party Theme

Have you ever planned a party only to discover that you cannot find the party decorations to meet your theme? Here are some simple tips that are sure to make your party a smash! The Cake:Bake the cake at home, spread on some icing and decorate.
Don't have time to make the cake? Instead of having the cake shop decorate your cake, purchase a no thrills cake. They can spread the icing and write Happy Birthday "Name" on the cake. When you get home, place your child's cleaned (or new) action figures on the cake.

If the cake is for an older person, consider some collectibles, or a few miniature birthday gifts, all related to the theme of course.Food:There are tons of recipes online to fit just about any budget or need. If you cannot find already prepared foods, simply prepare your dishes a week in advance. Then all you have to do is heat everything up on the day of the event.

Piñatas:Purchase a windmill style piñata, where the center is flat enough to hold something glued to it. Locate some old magazine photos, round designer paper plates, or posters of the theme at hand. Cut and glue the themed pictures to the flat portion of the piñata.Paper

Plates:Find magazine pictures or other forms of photos (could even use photocopied family pictures for a reunion) and place between two plastic plates. Use a clear plate on top and a dark color on the bottom. (Caution: when using paper cups, the drinks can slip between the two layers and cause a mess)

Banners:The banners can be made on your personal computer by scanning photos and then inserting into a banner program. Or you can purchase some blank banner paper and cut out pictures, glue to the paper, and use markers and letter stenciling for your words.Color Scheme:Try to stick to one color scheme. For instance, a Barbie theme would be pink and white, a Halloween theme would be red and black, and a silver wedding anniversary would be silver and white.

It's also a good idea to not go overboard on the pictures you use in creating your theme.
Though you may have lots of magazine options to choose from, too much is not always a good thing.Activities:When trying to locate a good activity for your themed party, keep in mind the age of the attendants. Small children cannot perform complicated tasks.

An elderly person may require the use of a crutch or wheelchair. It is also a good idea to consider the space available for the party. Although the guest of honor may have fifty friends and family members, the space may only allow ten or twenty to fit comfortably and still have a good time.About The AuthorAlyice Edrich is the award winning editor of The Dabbling Mum®. Pennies

You always hear the usual stories of pennies on the sidewalk being good luck, gifts from angels, etc. This is the first time I've ever heard this twist on the story. Gives you something to think about.

--------------------

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend.

The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house. The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live.

The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely.

As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment.Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny.

He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?

Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She casually mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value.

A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?'Look at it.' He said. 'Read what it says.' She read the words
' United States of America''
No, not that; read further.
''One cent?'
'No, keep reading.'
'In God we Trust?'
'Yes!'

'And?''And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him.

For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful! When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, 'In God We Trust,' and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message. It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful! And, God is patient...

Turning an old T-shirt into a reusable shopping or grocery bag

Turning an old T-shirt into a reusable shopping or grocery bag is a simple, clever craft to help everyone be "green." It's a Good Thing that will help protect the environment.

Tools and Materials

Heavy-weight cotton T-shirt

PinsSewing machine

Medium-size bowl

Water-erasable marking pen

Scissors

T-Shirt Bag How-To

1. Turn T-shirt inside out and pin bottom of the T-shirt along the hem. Using a sewing machine, sew bottom of T-shirt closed. Flip shirt right side out and lay flat on table, making sure all seams are lined up.

2. Place medium-size bowl about half-way over the neck hole. Using a water-erasable marking pen, trace along the edge of the bowl. Cut along the outline, making sure to go through the front and back sides of the shirt, in order to create an opening for the bag that's larger than what the neck hole allows.

3. Line up the hems on the front and back side of the sleeve and cut, making sure to go through both sides of the shirt. Repeat on the other sleeve. Tip: A jersey shirt would also work well for this craft, as it is already sleeveless, and it's made of a great mesh material.

Resources

Water-erasable marking pens can be purchased at most fabric stores for about $5. To purchase an already-made t-shirt bag, visit greenteebag.com.

After 65 years, couple inseparable - even in death

'They couldn't be parted': After long life together, husband and wife die of natural causes within 23 hours of each other.
By DOUG IRVING
The Orange County Register

Santa Ana -- Jerry Aten didn't last a day without his wife Marilyn.
She died on a Monday evening last month. He tried to give her one last kiss, but he was too unsteady to get out of his wheelchair. He held her hand, laid his head on her bed, and cried.
Their friends always use the same word to describe Jerry and Marilyn: inseparable. And so, 23 hours later, when his caretaker heard his breath go heavy and deep, and then stop, it seemed to them more a gift than a surprise.
Doctors who work with the elderly say it's not unusual for the death of one spouse to make the other feel more at peace with dying as well. Some researchers even believe that the loss of a loved one can stun the heart and cause symptoms similar to a heart attack, a phenomenon often called "broken heart syndrome."
But what happened with Jerry, 89, and Marilyn, 85, left even their pastor searching for words. "It's almost like they planned their departure perfectly," said Rev. Wilfredo Benitez of St. Anselm of Canterbury Episcopal Church in Garden Grove.
"I don't have any explanation for that. I can't say whether God planned it," he added. "It just seemed to me that the bond between the two of them was so strong that, even in death, they couldn't be parted."
They met on a blind date. He was a Michigan farm boy stationed with the Army in Northern California. She was a small-town California girl who always called him "Honey."
They were married 65 years ago in April. He went to work as a chemist; she stayed home and raised their only son, David. They bought a house with a big front lawn on a quiet street in Garden Grove, spent their weekends rooting for the Angels, spent their summers traveling the country in their camper.
There were rough spots, of course, but they did their best to live by the rule they had set early in their relationship. Never go to bed angry.
"There was always a little touch," said Pat Smith, a neighbor who was close to the Atens. "He'd sit down and she'd serve him dinner, and she'd touch him on the shoulder."
Marilyn was rushed to the hospital with stomach pain on Christmas Eve a few years ago. Doctors found cancer, removed two-thirds of her colon, and told her she would probably die in a matter of months. But she beat the cancer into remission with chemotherapy.
Jerry, meanwhile, was starting to get confused. Names didn't come to him so quickly anymore. One night, he walked out the door and wandered down the street. Doctors diagnosed Alzheimer 's disease.
But even on his worst days, he knew who Marilyn was. A few times, she checked him into a care center, and he would cry for her when she left. She brought him back home every time; "I can't stand not having him here," she told friends.
The pain in her stomach returned earlier this year, and she knew. She told her son, David, "If it's my time to go, it's my time to go." She and Jerry, she said, "had a great life together."
She died at home, in her bed. Jerry tried to lift himself out of his wheelchair to kiss her good-bye, then fell back and laid his head on her bed, next to her arm. He didn't say anything, just cried softly.
It was 11:40 p.m. on May 5.
Jerry woke up the next morning, talked to his son, greeted a neighbor. But he began crying again in the afternoon, and he was still crying when his caretaker, Theresa Palepale, helped him into bed that night.
She heard his breathing change and then stop about an hour later. She felt for a pulse, but didn't find one.
It was 10:40 p.m. on May 6.
Physicians would later determine that Marilyn had died of gastric cancer, and Jerry had died 23 hours later, to the minute, of cardiopulmonary arrest. They were buried in Riverside National Cemetery.
Their obituary ran in the newspaper on the day of the funeral. "Aten, Marilyn and Jerry," it read. "Together for eternity."

Mother's Day

Mother's Day was wonderful. Had a few unhappy kids but that was mostly from not eating or tired. Saturday we hubby took a load of stuff to the dump (cleaning out the garage and sheds) went to his Grandma's (mom to him she raised him) picked up his David Bradley and a rottitiller body. We are looking for a motor for it. He came home used the Bradley and plowed up the garden. :) He took the trailer to his sister's house and got a load of wood for this winter. We are almost stocked up for this winter.

Mother's Day was special. Josh made me a pin that says I love Mom. Chelsea planted a flower at school earlier this year. I got that. She went with her friend to the markets and they got me a flower and necklace. Audrey got me a hanging flower. Hubby got me chocolate mint plant, peppermint plant and horseradish plant. Yummy....I can't wait to be able to plant. Really hope to find a motor for that rottitiller.

My mom and I got each other a bag of candy. :) And we ate it together chatting away. Don't ever take your mom's for granted.

Reasons To Breast Feed

For many years, scientists have been playing out the ingredients that make breast milk the perfect food for babies. They've discovered to day over200 close compounds to fight infection, help theimmune system mature, aid in digestion, and supportbrain growth - nature made properties that sciencesimply cannot copy.

The important long term benefits of breast feedinginclude reduced risk of asthma, allergies, obesity, and some forms of childhood cancer. The more that scientists continue to learn, the better breast milk looks.

In addition to making your baby healthier, breastfeeding may also make him smarter. Many studieshave proved that breast fed babies tend to bemore smarter than babies who were fed with formulaor other methods. Breast feeding does help withnutrients and the support of brain growth, whichis something every mother should think about.

The benefits for the nursing mom are just asgood as they are for the baby. The hormones thatare released during breast feeding will curbblood loss post delivery and help to shrink theuterus back to it's normal size.

Long term, the breast feeding mom will have alower risk for premenopausal breast cancer, which is the kind that strikes before the ageof 50. The benefits will begin to show with three to six months of breast feeding and increasethe longer that breast feeding continues.

By now, you should realize that breast milk isone power packed liquid. It offers more for yourbaby than formula, or any other scientific creation for that matter. As you begin to planfor the future of your baby, make a commitmentto breast feeding him for as long as you possiblycan - as it will do both your bodies good.

Benefits Of Breast Feeding

Once you've given birth, breast feeding is the singlemost important thing you can do to protect your babyand help to promote good health. Best of all, breastfeeding is free.

Along with saving you money on HMR (Human Milk Replacement), breast feeding can also help you to keep your medical bills down. Babies that are fedwith formula get sicker more often and more seriouslythan babies that are breast fed They also have moreear infections, respiratory infections, and otherproblems.
This can be even more true if your family has had ahistory of allergies. When a baby is breast fed, theantibodies pass on from the mother to the baby, helping to protect against illness and allergies. Asthe baby's system matures, his body will begin to make it's own antibodies, and he'll be more equippedto handle sensitivities of food.

Sucking on the breast will also help with the development or jaw alignment and the development ofthe cheekbone. For this very reason, there is lessof the need for costly orthodontic work when the child gets older.
Unlike formula, breast milk is always ready, alwaysavailable, convenient, and always the right temperaturefor feeding. Plus, it contains all of the vitaminsand minerals your growing baby needs, saving you a lot of money.

Breast feeding also offers many benefits for the momas well. The baby sucking at the breast will causecontractions right after birth, leading to less bleeding for the mom, and helping her uterus to it'sshape before pregnancy much faster.
Breast feeding will also burn calories, so a mom canlose weight much faster than if she fed her baby witha bottle. Breast feeding will also create a specialbond with the mother and the baby - which is onething formula simpy cannot do.

What is Homeschooling

The term 'homeschooling' basically refers to the process in which one or more children of not more than 2 families are instructed by parents or legal guardians, or a member of either household. The laws that define homeschooling vary from State to State. The legal requirements for establishing a homeschool also vary with the State.

For most children, the actual process of learning begins much before school. Many children already know their alphabets, the names of animals, colors and other more complicated stuff before they reach school. This is mostly due to the hard work of a member of the family who has taken the time to teach the child. Homeschooling is just a natural progression from here. Instead of sending their children to a public school, parents make their own curriculum and teach their children in ways that best suit the child. This is homeschooling, in its most simplistic form.

Before you decide to go in for homeschooling, there are certain important matters for consideration. First off, meet with parents of other homeschoolers. Find out the pros and cons of homeschooling. Then ask yourself why you would want to adopt this method. This is a very important aspect, as the success of the program depends on the clarity and sincerity of your purpose.

Next, it is time to consider the expenses of homeschooling. It may cost anywhere between a few hundred dollars to a few thousand every year. More importantly, you are also effectively shutting out any job opportunity for one of the parents. It is only obvious that one parent will have to stay at home full time to manage the homeschool. A home-based business however is a great alternative.

Are you qualified to take on homeschooling for your children? Teaching is a continuation of your own learning process. With the advent of the internet, information is aplenty. There are various books and resources for those interested in homeschooling. Go through the various methods of homeschooling and choose one that is most suited to you. It helps if you know what kind of learning style your child has. Also, find out what your child feels about homeschooling before you start.

Every state has its own laws regarding homeschooling. For instance, in North Carolina, you must first file a 'Notice of Intent' to start a home school. In this you have to mention if the school is a 'Private church' school or a 'qualified non-public school'. The persons providing the education are required to have at least a high school diploma. You have to maintain an annual record of the child's attendance and disease immunization. Every year, the child is required to undergo a standardized test. Each student attending the eleventh grade has to take a nationally standardized test. These are the requirements in North Carolina, but it is enough to give you a good idea of what homeschooling entails.
Homeschooling may seem like a lot of fun and freedom from the outside. However, things are seldom as simple as they seem. Homeschooling is a lot of added responsibility and hard work. But, if successful, it will forge a strong bond of love and respect between parent and child, while providing your child with the best form of education he needs.

How to Bring Up Your Children Properly

Childhood years are the best times to learn. Somehow, a person’s comprehension is at its peak during childhood. Parents should take advantage of these learning years to ingrain the values of life in their children.
If you’re a parent, teach them positive habits so that they will know and see the beauty that life has to offer. Make them enthusiastic about life. Instill into their hearts and minds all the wonders and magnificence of being alive by living life to its fullest in a positive way.
There’s a startling difference between children learning through self-discovery, and children learning through self-discovery with proper guidance. The first things that children learn are usually the things that stay with them and mold formative years until they reach adulthood.
Let us suppose you let your children learn through self-discovery. To a certain extent, self-discovery is good since it develops full independence and self-reliance. However, the learning process might be slow. In a sense, it is like a trial and error experience for children. They have to segregate the good from the bad, the right from the wrong, what they like and what they don’t. It is most likely that what they will like are the ones that come easy to them or the ones that they enjoy the most. And the ones that they enjoy the most might not necessarily be the good ones. Without proper guidance, what they like and enjoy the most might actually be hurting them although they are not aware of it. Perhaps later, if they find out that they picked the wrong choices, it may be too late.
With self-discovery through proper guidance, you will be able to leave room for them to develop independence and self-reliance. At the same time, show them what is right and what is wrong. Explain to them why. If possible, cite instances or examples based on true-to-life events to make them more convincing and realistic. The more realistic they are, the more easily the children are convinced. Likewise, try teaching them in a friendly and humorous atmosphere. Children are more attentive and eager to learn when all (both teachers and students) are in an easy mood. You will know and feel their eagerness to learn through the sparkle in their eyes and by the way they answer your questions. You can be sure that what they learn from you is acceptable to them and will stay with them. That is why, as a parent, you must show enthusiasm in life to your children.
There’s a third method of making children learn. That is through proper guidance leaving negligible room for self-discovery. But there are drawbacks. You take away from them the benefits of self-reliance and independence. The guidance you devote to them may be good and well intended, but they must not rely on you on almost everything they do. They become decision-dependent on you. There are instances wherein this type of guidance might be worse than giving no guidance at all.
There are parents who underwent hardships during their childhood, strived, and became successful financially. Although they are financially in the position to guide and assist their children to a better life, they prefer that their children undergo the same difficult experience they underwent during their younger years. Their reason: so that their children will value and experience the same things they went through. This may be applicable to stubborn and rebellious youngsters, but not to disciplined ones. Why must their sons and daughters repeat the same difficulties? There’s no reason to. This is like punishing the innocent. Instead of repeating the experience, they should learn from it. Life is too short to repeat unsavory experiences.
One of the best ways to broaden your children’s knowledge about life is by traveling. The world - its varied people, places, and cultures - has a lot of information to offer. It is perhaps as important as the conventional classroom. If you are financially able, traveling is one of the best educational experiences you can give your children. Look for exhibits or world fairs, and take your children there. Books are the next best things. It’s traveling by reading.
Fill your children with thoughts of self-importance, confidence, and positive attitude so that there will be no room for negative thinking. More importantly, fill their world with laughter, love, and understanding. You‘ll never go wrong.
